Okay. I don’t even know how I found this gal, but here she is, a darling homeschool mom who is brilliant, artistic, practical and well…adorable. What can I say.
I asked Grace if I could interview her on my blog (something I have never done) because what she offers has so much value. Grace creates beauty. Her beauty help US create order. Win. Win. Win-er-oo. Anyway, Grace, I haven’t told you this yet, because, well, we just met. But I love you. I love you because order has a purpose. The purpose is to be able to love our people better. And that’s why I love you.
Tell me a little about you and your family, Grace.
I am Grace Peters from Plum Cheeky Solutions. I am a child of God, wife of 13 years, mother of 4, second generation homeschooler and an organization and planning fanatic!
I love order in all areas of my life. In my relationships, our home, our schedule, work life, meals…everything! It keeps things running well around here.
Over the years the need to be organized and plan ahead has increased, but I have learned to give myself a little more grace (no pun intended!). Order and organization doesn’t mean perfect around here!
How long have you been homeschooling your kids?
This is our eighth year homeschooling. I was homeschooled off and on growing up and I even preferred it myself, but I didn’t think about homeschooling my own children. The Lord had different ideas…
The night before my hubby was going to wait in line to register my daughter for kindergarten, I could not sleep. I was tossing and turning with the idea and was not at peace about sending her. Homeschooling kept coming to my mind, but the idea of it seemed overwhelming.
After a restless night and lots of prayer, I woke my hubby up in the early morning and asked him if we could skip the registration and think about homeschooling. He agreed and was happy to go back to sleep. I was then finally able to fall asleep.
You seem like a natural cheerleader; were you always organized…did you always encourage others?
Thanks! As far back as I can remember I have been organized. I love when things function optimally, I think that’s why I love organizing so much. Planning also is another passion of mine because it’s organizing, but on paper.
I grew up with five younger brothers and if you were to ask them, I’m sure they would say “bossy” instead of “encourager” (!) Haha…In my mind I was “encouraging” them to keep things orderly.
I have such a desire for moms to be encouraged in the trenches of motherhood and homemaking. To live each day with intention, joy and grace in the everyday mundane. I’m still learning this!
Being a mom, whether you are a homeschooler or not is not for the feint of heart. It is such a blessing, but it can also be exhausting mentally, physically and emotionally.
My desire it to build a community for moms to feel encouraged and inspired, as well as to provide tools for planning and organizing. We all need a cheerleader; someone who will say “I know what you’re going through…you’ve got this!” and to be around others who understand where we are coming from.
What drew me to your products was the beauty and simplicity. I was so impressed with that. Tell us about beauty, and where you see it fitting into family life.
There is beauty in the everyday, but sometimes it’s hard to see it or enjoy it when we are scrambling to keep up…I’m speaking from experience here…
I was looking for products for myself for planning our home life as well as for homeschooling. I wanted simple, easy to use and beautiful inside and out. Plus, a place where I could plan everything for home in one place, such as meals, cleaning, bill payments, etc.
I tried multiple planners, but nothing fit my life.
I got this crazy idea to create some planners for myself. That was highly ambitious, because at that point I only knew how to google search and check email. After almost a year of creating, I had made a couple of products. The Student Planner and the Home Life Planner. I had a few friends test them out to see if they would enjoy them and they were a hit!
The Student Planners are a great fit for homeschooling families. There are pages for planning curriculum resource, field trips, projects and for keeping track of assignments and books read. Personally, the Student Planners have been helpful in teaching my children to be independent workers. We plan out a week or two at at time so they know what is expected of them each day. They are able to work through their daily and weekly goals and keep track of what they have accomplished.
The Home Life Planner is a fantastic tool for many women. The majority of women that have used it are moms, but there have been a few who just love to be organized on paper and have found the Home Life Planner helpful.
Tell me what chaos you are trying to help families avoid.
I want to help families avoid the added stress from the chaos life. If we are not taking the time to plan and be intentional., then we are constantly putting out fires that come up from being reactive instead of proactive. for example, when I don’t plan out meals for the week, I’m at a loss at the grocery store as far as what to buy and I wander around the store. I can be intentional with my time and shopping when I know what the meals are for the week.
When there isn’t a plan for dinner, I end up standing at the fridge at 5 p.m. going “ah. What do I make for dinner!?” Having a plan in place helps avoid the “what’s for dinner?” chaos or eating take-out on a weekly basis.
What are the pros and cons of running home business with a young family?
The pros of running a home based business is that I get to be home, to be here for everyone and I still get the opportunity to homeschool.
The con is the it can be hard to figure out the work/life balance and establish boundaries between the two. I want to make sure my family and home are the first priority, but that doesn’t always leave room for work. I have to stay intentional, staying on top of things around the home and schooling to make time to work on my business.
What’s the next step?
That’s a great question! I’ve been trying to figure that out myself.
My next step is to continue to build the Plum Cheeky Solutions community by writing practical and encouraging blog posts and by creating excellent resource to help home, school and life. If you’re interested in following along, come visit me at:
Thanks, Grace. I’m delighted to meet the lady behind the lovely! I wish you well on this journey, and thanks for making ours a little smoother…
