Advocating against legalized abortion of fetuses in the womb
Opposing legalized abortion
Protecting the unborn child
Naturally these are aspects of Pro-Life…but a pretty narrow definition, don’t you think?
Pro-Life, means in its literal translation, in favour of life…for life. In the Catholic world, the basis for the stand of Pro-Life is an innate respect for the dignity of the human person on all fronts. From conception to life’s natural end.
And everything in between, my friends. EVERYTHING. Pro mother-in-law. Pro irritating neighbour. Pro liberal Christians. Pro your spouse and all his or her blessings and faults. And fertility. Pro your own children. And while there isn’t a moment in my day where the dignity of an unborn child isn’t crystal clear to me, I don’t always treat the “having been born already” around me with the dignity they deserve.
Respect for the life of the unborn demands respect for the born. It would be ludicrous to protect the rights of the unborn if we are weak on protecting the rights of the born. It would be incongruous to respect life at all its stages from conception until its natural end and forget to respect all those in the middle.
Tomorrow: who is in the middle?
